A-Rod homered off of Boston ace closer Jonathan Papelbon to put the Yankees ahead 6-5. The long ball came with two outs in the top of the ninth and two strikes on him.
The Yankees had jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a base hit up the middle from Josh Phelps. They added three more runs off of undefeated Josh Beckett to extend the lead to 4-0. A-Rod got an RBI on an infield single and another run scored on the same play due to a throwing error. Posada extended the lead to 4-0 and the Yankees for a while were cruising.
Pettite's back stiffended and the Bosox came all the way back with a five spot. Pedroia hit a two run double and Ortiz hit a liner to right which got past Abreu for another run and Ortiz ended up on third. He would eventually score the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly.
The Yankees bullpen pitched well and the Yankees were able to tie the game late on a single from Matsui and a triple from Robinson Cano. Cano was left stranded on third, despite being there with no outs.
Vizcaino, Bruney and company held the Red Sox in check and A-Rod hit the big bomb off Papelbon in the ninth to take the lead. Mariano Rivera was able to go through the heart of the Red Sox order to save the game.
