06/19: Andy's Back
Pete A. reports that
Andy Phillips is getting a call-up and that Josh Phelps will be DFA'd. That seems kind of counter-intuitive to me.
Looking at the active roster, why would you let Phelps go when you can drop never used Chris Basak? If you keep Phelps, at the very least, you would have a decent bat on the bench. If you keep Basak, you gain...absolutely nothing.

For chrissakes, the guys has yet to have a ML at-bat. He is a good fielder, can play many positions, and hit well in AAA and spring training. Give the kid a chance.
Phelps is an OK hitter, but thats it. He is a butcher at 1b and can't play any other positon (except emergency catcher).
The issue is between Phelps and Andy, because Basak plays the other infield positions and OF. I would much rather have Andy - who is a good fielder, can also play other infield positions, and at worst will only be a minor downgrade offensivly. Having good D and versatility is more important from this backup position than is 20 more points of BA.
And besides, I still think that Andy can do better as a hitter than he showed last year. Maybe I am wrong about that, but it does seem odd that someone can consistently hit well above 300 in AAA, and cant do at least 270-280 in the bigs.
