Just when you think baseball has gone and turned that proverbial corner from the steroid scandal, we get news, though there is no official confirmation of any kind yet, that an AL outfielder has tested positive for steroids. Deadspin looks like they were the first to post something about this based on the following text in the latest edition of USA Today Sports Weekly:

"An American League outfielder on a postseason team tested positive for steroids, according to his agent, but the player is appealing the results."

From that point on, it looks like the story was picked up by a couple of different blogs but hasn't hit the major sports networks just yet. Normally, I wouldn't report on this unless there was some announcement somewhere detailing proof of these allegations. However, David Pinto over at Baseball Musings has picked up the story as well and points readers to the following text from Will Carroll (of Baseball Prospectus, Under the Knife and "The Juice" fame) during a Sports Bloggers Live radio show:

Carroll: "I really can't talk about it right now. It should be coming out within the next two weeks."

SBL: "Is this a name we're actually going to care about?"

Carroll: "Yes."

SBL: "Is it a World Series champion?"

Carroll: "I really can't talk about it."

SBL: "I would hope not, because that might turn those White Sox black... Will, cough once if he's on the White Sox... Cough twice if it's Gary Sheffield."

Carroll: "I was involved in the appeals process so I can't comment at all."

Wow. Simply a stunning situation if it proves to be correct. Of course, due to my own personal bias, I can't imagine that it is a Yankee (though a lot of people out there seem to think that it's Sheff simply based on his prior experience and connection to Barry Bonds). We'll all have to see how this plays out over the next couple of weeks, if it even proves to be true. Wait and see.
