08/25: Yankees Comeback Comes to an Abrupt End in 10-9 Loss to Rangers
Posted by: Patrick
Though the Yankees book ended the game with two four run innings, it wouldn't be enough to beat the Rangers.
Things got off to a great start in the first with the team going up 4-0 thanks to two out rally that included a two RBI double by Hideki Matsui (scoring Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez) and a Jorge Posada home run to bring Matsui around.
This wasn't enough runs for a roughed up Joba Chamberlain, unfortunately. In 4 innings of work, he'd allow 7 earned runs on 9 hits and 3 walks, lifting his season ERA to 4.34. By the time he was done, the Yankees were down 7-5, with the fifth run coming on a Robinson Cano solo homer, his 20th of the season.
Chad Gaudin would be next in line to face the Rangers and that would mean 3 more runs over 3.2 innings. The Yankees bats, meanwhile? Silent. Damaso Marte pitched the final 1.1 innings scoreless, allowing only a walk.
But, the Yankees were not done. With Jason Grilli in to pitch, Johnny Damon led off with a single and Teixiera walked to put runners on first and second. The Rangers made their second pitching change of the inning, bringing in Frank Francisco.
But, he couldn't get anyone out, either. An A-Rod walk loaded the bases for Hideki Matsui who scored Damon on a single. Jorge Posada brought Teixeira around on an infield single that kept the bases loaded. Jerry Hairston Jr. pinch ran for Posada.
Robinson Cano continued the streak with a single that scored both A-Rod and Matsui. Hairston Jr., the tying run, moved to second with no outs and Nick Swisher, Melky Cabrera and Derek Jeter due up.
But, just as quickly as it started, that's how quick it ended. Swisher attempted to bunt and popped it up for the first out. Melky then lined out to the shortstop, who caught Hairston off the base for an unassisted double play to end the game. The Rangers escape - barely, and we take a loss.
Matsui, Posada and Cano all picked up 3 RBI in this one with Teixeira, Rodriguez and Matsui all scoring twice.
Tomorrow at &;05 PM ET, we'll get Andy Pettitte (10-6, 4.25) against Derek Holland (7-7, 4.72) in game two of the series.
Recap records: Seamus: 36–22, Patrick: 33–15, Andrew: 9–10
