You could say that Paul Byrd had a rough day today. He threw 56 pitches in 2 innings, allowing 7 earned runs on 7 hits, 1 walk and 1 strikeout. While the Indians struck first (a Victor Martinez sac fly with 1 out in the 1st), the Yankees struck loudest and struck last to blowout the Tribe, 11-2. The Yankees offense had 19 hits and 2 walks.
It took him 381 games, but Jose Molina had the first 4 hit game of his career, going 4 for 5 with 1 2B and 1 run. But, A-Rod led the offense with 2 home runs (he is now 1 short of 40), as he was 2 for 5 with 4 RBIs. Besides that, the rest of the lineup starters posted the following numbers: Damon was 2 for 6 with 1 2B, 1 R and 2 RBI, Jeter was 3 for 6 with 1 R, Abreu was 2 for 5 with 1 R and 2 RBI, Matsui was 2 for 5 with 2 R, Cano was 1 for 4 with 1 2B, 1 R and 1 BB, Melky was 1 for 4 with 1 RBI and Phillips was 1 for 2 with 1 R, 1 RBI and 1 BB. So, every one of them had at least 1 hit. And if that wasn't enough, Jason Giambi had a pinch hit, solo home run in the 9th inning. It was his first homer since May 29.
As the title of this entry indicates, the Yankees had a big 7th, scoring 7 runs. It went a little something like this: Matsui singled. Cano doubled. Melky sac flied (scoring Matsui). Phillips walked. Molina singled. Damon doubled, scoring Phillips and Cano. Jeter struck out. Abreu singled, scoring Damon and Molina. A-Rod homered, scoring Abreu. Matsui grounded out.
Not to be lost in this effort, of course, is the fact that Moose was terrific, pitching 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing just 2 ER on 8 hits, no walks and 6 strikeouts. It was Moose's 100th win as a Yankee. Congrats to him. He was relieved by Vizcaino, who threw a scoreless 1/3, leaving a runner stranded at 3rd. Villone pitched the 9th. After allowing the first two hitters to single, he struck out the next batter and got Asdrubal Cabrera to ground into a double play to end it.
A very satisfying win, all the way around. It gives us the series win against Cleveland and it's a good thing we won, because the Red Sox and Mariners did, as well. Tomorrow, we'll have Pettitte (8-7, 4.00) against former Yankee Jake Westbrook (3-6, 5.00) at 1:05 PM ET.
