08/12: '77 Beat Writer on "The Bronx is Burning"

First of all, Billy Martin's ears weren't nearly that big. Take it from someone who spent countless hours in Martin's five managerial terms with the Yankees seeing those ears up close during talks in ballparks and bars across the country. Fact is, Martin was more sensitive about the size of his nose.
But Martin's exaggerated ears are among the only flaws that stick out badly in "The Bronx is Burning" -- the entertaining ESPN eight-part series that focuses on the 1977 Yankees season. John Turturro captures Martin's look and sound so perfectly, right down to the inflections and laugh and tilt of the cowboy hat, that it's downright, well, eerie.
