12/30: Johnson Rumored to Be Done

Dan Benton over at Off The Facade is reporting that the oft-rumored Randy Johnson trade is done.

Apparently the agreement was for two prospects (Nippert & Owings) but there were no further details on the money situation. The two teams have agreed but it is pending a contract extension. The D-Backs will have a 72 hour window to negotiate with Johnson. If that falls through [and I hope it doesn’t] the entire trade will fall through.

He's thrown in some updates (specifically a Connor Jackson update...which made my heart skip a beat) since then so I would recommend heading over and checking it out. While I liked Nippert the least of the three prospects mentioned earlier, I will be eagerly waiting to see what the official word is. Of course, the commissioner's office is closed until Tuesday so this might be a little bit of a wait. Commence waiting...now.

My concern also falls on the Yankees for whom is going to replace the average of 17 wins? IMO it isn't a question easily AND ACCURATELY answered. Receiving 'good arms' is nice, but what do they do in answer to the immediate need RE: the 17 wins?

Some of the issues the media had with Johnson were well deserved, some were not. But ultimately, I'm looking at the success of the season and playoffs / world series. Who will fill the void?

(As an aside, I appreciate one of our guys be given an opportunity. But we simply cannot fairly expect that avenue be used for all of the 17 wins.)

I completely agree that 17 wins is hard to replace, but I still like the trade anyway. I know that it is all speculation but this trade could open the door for many great opportunities. If we can convince clemens to come back he is good for 17, or if pavano can stay healthy(lol) his stuff and our run support is good for 15+. Also with the way we loaded up on young arms, also thanks to the money zito got, the marlins will not be resigning willis, and unless they are in a pennant race willis can be had w/o giving up hughes. this is an exciting trade and I don't think we will see the full benefits of this trade for a few months.

On a side note: Trading randy johnson opens the door for roger clemens, which in the past couple of days, has been talked about. I think roger clemens can replace his 5.00 ERA and 17 Wins. But the question is will roger clemens start the season for the yankees or will he start it mid season?
