07/23: Giambi Takes BP
Posted by: James
Pretty much just what the title states. ESPN is reporting that Jason Giambi took 38 swings today in his first on-field BP session since his injury.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out between Damon/Giambi at DH and Damon/Cabrera in CF. If they're smart, they'll keep playing Cabrera in the OF - the upgrade in defense has been more than worth it so far.
The New York Yankees designated hitter also started running the bases and kept up a throwing program. He hopes to rejoin the Yankees by August.
"Everything is great so far," Giambi said. "Better than expected."

As far as I am concerned Cabrera should start every game in center. If you have been watching closely to the games lately other teams have shown tremendous respect for Melky's arm. There were numerous chances teams could of went 1st to 3rd or tagged to 3rd but they didn't. If Damon was there they guaranteed would have gone and especially guaranteed to be safe, which in return would of increased the possibility of those runners scoring. Melky gives the pitchers support by making runners hesitate to run and also I believe he keeps the clubhouse fresh (although Damon does as well). Finally watching an outfielder have an arm and having team respect it is great to see for me. Now we don’t have to automatically assume that the runner will score on a base hit without a throw (Damon’s forte); no we say “this guy is dead, or gun him out Melky.” Granted Damon has a better bat then Cabrera but he could also find time as a DH or a pinch hitter for someone late in the game.
Just thought I would say something regarding this topic. It was my first response of my yanksblog career, hope it wasn’t terrible. Have a good one.
