12/17: Reports: Yankees and Nick Johnson Talks Intensifying

George A. King III of the Post reports that the Yankees and free agent first baseman Nick Johnson are in serious discussions on a one year contract. He made $5.5 million last season and Ken Rosenthal at FOX Sports says that the Giants have made him an offer in the area of $5.5 to $6 million dollars. Joel Sherman categorized the talks as "ongoing/hot."

Personally, I'd prefer they try to sign Mark DeRosa. Can play multiple positions, can hit. It would go with the plan of having multiple players in the DH spot, Posada, Rodriguez, Jeter, Swisher, Teixera, and others, and freshen up outfielders and infielders. I like that over Nick Johnson who can only play first base, and that only if he's healthy.

Thanks for the comment, Mark. DeRosa has some advantages over Johnson, I agree. But, Johnson has some over him, as well. Namely, Johnson is more of an offensive weapon, which could count for something if the team is looking for someone to be a primary DH. But, if not, then DeRosa would be an option, too.
